What Cursor is

Cursor is a fork of VS Code with the AI agent built into the editor rather than parked in a sidebar. The agent indexes your repository, so the unit of work is "describe a change across files, review the diff" instead of pasting snippets into a chat. Extensions and keybindings carry over from VS Code, which keeps the switching cost low for anyone already there.

Our full review, with every plan, the legacy-plan switch decision, and picks per buyer, is at Cursor review.

Day-to-day features

Tab completion proposes multi-line edits from the surrounding code and your recent changes. The Agent plans and applies changes across several files. Cloud agents keep working after you close the laptop, and Self-hosted Machines lets those agents run tool calls on your own infrastructure so code and secrets stay inside your network, per Cursor's changelog. Projects, in beta since September 10, puts a coordinator agent over a larger body of work and delegates it to parallel subagents, per Cursor's changelog.

Models

Paid plans include a weekly pool for Cursor's own models: Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5, and Composer 2.5, per Cursor's Models & Pricing docs. Claude, GPT, and Gemini are available on Premium and above at each model's API list price, paid from prepaid credit. OpenAI has proposed November 12, 2026 as the shutoff date for its models in Cursor, per OpenAI. Bring-your-own-key works for chat models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure OpenAI, and AWS Bedrock, per Cursor's help center.

Pricing

New customers start on The X Subscription, which bundles Cursor with Grok and X Premium. Prices per Cursor's docs, checked October 16, 2026:

Existing customers on legacy Pro ($20/mo), Pro+ ($60/mo), Ultra ($200/mo), or Teams Standard ($40/user/mo) and Premium ($120/user/mo) keep their plan, which still includes a pool for third-party models, per Cursor's legacy-plans docs. Switching to The X Subscription is optional and permanent.

Who it fits, and the rating

Rated 4.1, matching our full review. Cursor is the pick for IDE-first developers who do real multi-file work and are comfortable running most of it on Composer 2.5 or Grok; Premium at $30/mo is the realistic starting plan, per Cursor. It loses ground on pricing: new plans bill Claude and GPT as a metered extra, and the cheapest paid tier has no third-party models at all. If Claude or GPT is your daily driver and you want one flat bill, GitHub Copilot Pro+ at $39/mo includes credits across Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok, per GitHub.
