OpenAI brings three GPT-6 models to Google Cloud's Model Garden
Google Cloud said it is now the only major cloud provider selling access to all three "leading closed source LLMs" on one platform, after striking a deal to list OpenAI's newest GPT-6 models inside its Model Garden starting October 21, 2026, per Google Cloud's announcement.
What
OpenAI and Google Cloud confirmed the partnership brings OpenAI's frontier models and Codex agentic workflows into Model Garden, per OpenAI's own post. Google Cloud's announcement named three specific models rolling out now in private preview to select enterprise customers: GPT-6 Astra for coding, computer use, and scientific research; GPT-6.1 Sol, pitched as near-Astra intelligence at lower cost; and GPT-6 Luna, a faster model built for everyday work at scale, per Google Cloud's post. Customers buy the models through Google Cloud Marketplace, and usage lands on a single Google Cloud invoice, draws down existing Google Cloud spend commitments, and counts toward Flexible Savings Plans across model providers, per the same post. Developers can also connect their local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows directly to Google's Gemini platform for inference starting now. OpenAI models are coming soon to Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent, per OpenAI's announcement.
Enterprise GCP spend now covers OpenAI without a separate contract
The purchasing mechanism is the part that changes an actual buying decision. A company already committed to Google Cloud spend no longer needs a standalone OpenAI enterprise agreement to run GPT-6 models at scale. The Model Garden listing routes that spend through the same invoice and the same Flexible Savings Plan math a buyer already uses for Gemini and other models. Google Cloud is pitching the data boundary around that access too: prompts, context, and outputs stay inside the customer's designated data perimeter and are not used to train foundation models, with Zero Data Retention and Confidential Compute both listed as "coming soon" rather than live today, per Google Cloud's post. Access right now is private preview only, open to select enterprise customers who apply through a Google Cloud interest form, so most GCP customers cannot buy GPT-6 Astra, Sol, or Luna yet.
Context and reactions
Google frames the listing as proof its Model Garden now spans more than 200 first-party, third-party, and open models, alongside what it called all three leading closed-source LLMs, a characterization from Google Cloud's own post rather than an independent count. Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 are already listed inside Google Antigravity, a move Google Cloud covered in a separate post linked from this announcement. Box VP of AI Products Yashodha Bhavnani said using OpenAI models through Google Cloud will let the company give customers access to OpenAI's frontier AI models alongside Google Cloud's security and compliance capabilities, per Google Cloud's post, a customer endorsement rather than a neutral review. OpenAI president Greg Brockman and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian both framed the deal as expanding model choice for enterprise builders rather than a change to either company's own roadmap.
What to watch next
Watch for the private preview to open more broadly, a public price list for GPT-6 Astra, Sol, and Luna inside Model Garden, and whether Mistral or other frontier labs land similar multi-cloud distribution deals once OpenAI's listing proves out.
